The Semmler vineyard lies a few kilometers to the North West of the township of Lyndoch and is home to one of the oldest plantings of Tempranillo in the Barossa Valley. Two clones of Tempranillo planted on a one - hectare hillside block in 1998 provide the fruit for the single vineyard “La Reto” Tempranillo. Crop level is naturally restricted due to the lighter, stony, well - draining soils found across the site with the block usually cropping at 5 T /Ha. Yield in 2014 was 4.9 tonnes (2 T / ac).
Harvest in 2014 was slightly early. Fruit was machine picked on February 11, crushed and de-stemmed into a small open stainless - steel fermenter. The must was cold soaked at 12 – 15°C with daily juice pump - overs for three days until fermentation commenced. The ferment was then allowed to warm up to a maximum of 30°C with juice pump – over three times daily to extract flavour, colour and tannins. After 10 days on skins, the wine was pressed, settled and racked to seasoned 500, 300 and 225 litre French oak barrels where it completed malolactic fermentation. The wine was racked off lees, sulfured and returned to barrel for 36 months prior to final blending and bottling.
